Setting: Briar Rose, Enchanted Forest. 243 ADO @snow Meg/Mimi Koyle
Hades’ toy was late. Madeline hated tardiness, even more so when it came to someone keeping her waiting and twice as much when it was someone so insignificant that she normally wouldn’t have given them the time of day. Madeline should not be kept waiting and she had certainly punished others for less. If this were one of her own ‘companions’ then they would certainly find themselves with a proper punishment, but she tried not to mess with the toys of others, at least not anything that would leave a mark, though a good dressing down was always satisfying. Then again, sometimes her temper got the best of her. However, she did need this fellow that Hades was sending and there was no other matters to attend to, so waiting she was. The staff at Whitmore Keep was small, just enough to attend to the needs of Madeline and her husband. The other…workers on the property could not be trusted to keep to their task, nor were they age wise suited for it. The children. Hades owed her a favor and he had several suitable servants for this, so he said.
For now, Madeline stood in front of the fire, the heat from it turning her pale cheeks red. There was some comfort in the flames for her, ever since she had spent those years as a dragon. She held her hand close to the flames, so close that most would shy away from it for fear of burning their skin, but Madeline showed no such sensitivity to the feeling. Their residence was not a large castle but had many similar features and the inside was elaborately styled, but held a homey and comfortable sense to it, as if it were well lived in. The land was the more impressive part, as they were clearly isolated and held a great deal of land, which included the hill they lived on and forestry. Deep in those forests was where they mined the jewels and other precious jewels and metals. Even deeper were where the children were held when they weren’t in the mines, but that wasn’t a part of the forest that many saw, not even those who worked within this household. The less that knew about that, the better, was Madeline’s thought.
A knock finally came to the door to the chamber and a servant escorted a young woman in. Despite her own youthful appearance, Madeline scoffed. He had sent her a woman. “This is what he sends me? A little slip of a thing?” she said in lieu of a greeting. She huffed out a frustrated breath, turning her back to the young woman for a moment, as if she were thinking of sending the girl away. Her fingers tapped lightly on the elaborately decorated walking cane. What this some kind of hoax Hades was attempting? Perhaps he was trying to play a trick on her; he did have more of a sense of humor than Madeline did. Her shoulders straightened as she decided, turning back to the girl. She would give her the chance. If she failed, it would mean her death, whether by Madeline’s hand or another. It wasn’t ideal but the time wasted on finding a better candidate was not something Madeline cared for.
“You’re late,” she said, coldly. “Did your master not tell you not to keep me waiting?” Madeline had worked with Hades before ad he certainly knew some of her peculiarities, as she knew his. Slowly she made her way down the stairs, shoes tapping against the stone. She approached the girl, walking a slow circle around her in examination before she finally stood in front of her, gazing directly into her eyes. “What do you have to say for yourself?” Despite the fact that she was not pleased, her voice was still cool, almost devoid of emotion, as was her face, stern but not angry. In a strange way, there was a sense of disappointment, like a mother might exhibit towards a disobedient child.
